This past Thursday Outrider headed out to Red River Gorge to capture some video, time-lapse, and HDR. We were excited to experiment more with HDR as some of our favorite photographs were taken using this technique.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. The sensors of digital (and film) cameras are limited to a certain range of exposure – meaning the sensors are limited in how much information they can obtain from dark to light. In order to cheat this limitation, photographers will take multiple shots of the same image at different exposures and composite a single photograph which holds the darkest of darks and brightest of highlights (and everything in between). The challenge is to composite these photographs in a photorealistic way – free of “otherwordly” and surreal tone mapping.  Good HDR means that most will not be able to tell that it is an HDR image.

Fun stuff.

All projects begin the same way: on a blank sheet of paper. Producers in Kentucky and producers in Hollywood are all searching for that perfect story – the ideal combination of an intriguing plot along with the proven production elements which will bring people into the theater. Finding this story is the hard part. Good stories are few and far between and good stories packaged into a sellable film are even harder to find.

So, what does this have to do with Outrider?

Outrider is a company that started with a simple purpose: to help build Kentucky into a source for professional production. We wanted to make films at the highest possible level and we wanted to do it in Kentucky. Unfortunately, this isn’t as easy as it sounds – and to be quite honest, it takes longer than any of us realized. Over the past few months Outrider has been quiet – but we have not been sleeping. We’ve been hard at work trying to find the right project to get off the ground. As I said previously, finding the right project is an industry wide challenge – and it is a problem multiplied when you have little financial means and an unestablished reputation.

So to recap:

  • Outrider has been quiet, but busy.
  • We are committed to producing our films in Kentucky.
  • We are committed to only producing stories of quality.
  • We are committed to producing films that will sell.

And the good news? We’ve found our project.
